A daily return to scripture

Friday, October 16, 2026

He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32 · ESV

Historical Context

Matthew places this teaching on a day when Jesus left a house and sat by the sea. So many people gathered that Jesus got into a boat and sat down to teach, while the crowd stood on the beach. He taught the crowds through a series of parables that day, telling them nothing without a parable. Just before this one, he told a parable about weeds sown in a field. He then told the parable of the mustard seed, followed by one about yeast mixed into a batch of dough, before sending the crowds away and going into the house.

That crowd was not easy to reach. Jesus said plainly that many could look directly at what he was doing and still not see, or hear him and still not understand. By the end of the same chapter, when he returned to his hometown, its people took offense at him, and he did few mighty works there because they did not believe. To people who kept missing what was right in front of them, he described a kingdom that begins too small to notice.

Reflection

The kingdom of heaven begins so small that someone could walk past without noticing, yet it grows larger than everything planted around it. A mustard seed was already a byword for anything tiny. It grows into a plant tall enough to be called a tree, where birds can settle in its branches. Its final size bears no resemblance to its size at the start.

You may be watching something small right now and wondering whether it is worth the effort. Maybe it is a habit of prayer no one applauds, a kindness no one has noticed, or years spent trying to change one thing about how you treat people. You could read this parable as speaking to that kind of beginning. The mustard seed’s small start gave no hint of what it would grow into, and your small start may not show you either. Give it time before you decide it never grew.
