Restores My Soul

A daily return to scripture

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.”
Jeremiah 1:5 · ESV

Historical Context

This call came to Jeremiah in the thirteenth year of King Josiah, years before Josiah’s better-known reform. Judah was still living in the long shadow of Josiah’s grandfather Manasseh, a period marked by widespread idol worship. Jeremiah himself names that year as the start of his work. He was young when it happened, young enough that his first response was to say he did not know how to speak.

The task awaiting him was heavier than his age suggested. Jeremiah would spend most of his life warning a nation that refused to change course. He would watch the city and temple he grew up near come under threat and eventually fall. None of that had happened yet when God spoke to him.

Reflection

Notice the order here. God says he knew Jeremiah before he was formed, set him apart before he was born, and had already decided what his life would be for, long before Jeremiah had a track record to judge. Nothing Jeremiah had done yet could have earned that. The call came first, and nothing that happened afterward changed that order.

If you have ever wondered whether you needed to become someone impressive before your life could matter to God, look at what happened to Jeremiah before he had done anything at all. Jeremiah’s usefulness was settled first, not after he had something to show. Whatever you still think you need to prove, in Jeremiah’s story the knowing came first.
