Historical Context

Paul wrote this letter to the church at Rome from the city of Corinth sometime in the late 50s AD, before he had ever set foot in Rome. He had neither founded that church nor led it. A network of believers already existed there when he wrote.

Most of them had little standing in the city: the poor, slaves, and immigrants, packed into the empire’s crowded capital. By then, Nero sat on the throne, having succeeded Claudius a few years earlier. Within living memory, Claudius had ordered the Jews expelled from Rome. Inside the church itself, Jewish and non-Jewish believers pulled against each other over how much of that older custom still applied. Paul addressed that strain later in the letter.

Just before this passage, Paul had told these believers to pay the state whatever it could rightly claim from them, whether in taxes or in plain respect. A government that had already shown its power over people like them was owed its due in full. Then Paul turned from a debt that could be settled to one that never closes: what these poor, divided believers owed each other.

Reflection

Paul says that loving other people is a debt you never fully pay. You do not settle it once and walk away, as you would pay off a loan. Instead, you keep loving, and that payment is not something extra alongside the law. It is the law itself, carried out.

The commandments about how you treat other people, the ones every reader already knew, boil down to one instruction. Do not harm the person next to you. Love already covers it.

That changes how you treat someone you feel you have already given enough to. Maybe it is a parent who never says thank you. Maybe it is a coworker who takes more than they give. Maybe it is a friend who keeps forgetting to call back.

You do not get to decide the debt is paid and then stop. Love them again today. Do it the way you did before you decided you had done enough. You will have kept the whole law without ever finishing it.
